Duration of work stoppage per operation: official guidelines

How long should I take off work after surgery? Following consultation with the High Authority for Health (HAS), the French National Health Insurance (Assurance Maladie) publishes indicative reference periods for each procedure and job type. This table compiles them, with a link to each official fact sheet. These are guidelines established "in the absence of complications": the actual duration is determined by the doctor or surgeon, based on your individual situation, your job, and your recovery.

The reference guide for time limits : Downtime varies from country to country and institution to institution. The reference guide displays side-by-side what each institution publishes, along with the original citation. Consult the reference guide.

News: The annual ceiling for medical deductibles and fixed co-payments is set to double in October 2026. Our article explains what this means in practice.

Two columns of durations are presented: one for a sedentary job and one for a physically demanding job (the fact sheets also detail intermediate levels, which can be expanded under each entry). For procedures, daily allowances, and the role of each party, consult our guide to sick leave after surgery.

How to read these markers without making a mistake

These durations are neither a right, nor a maximum, nor a promise of recovery: they are published guidelines to assist prescribers, established in the absence of complications. An earlier or later return to work is common and legitimate; comorbidities, complications, commuting distance, the actual physical demands of the job, or the possibility of workplace adjustments all influence the situation. The decision rests with the physician, and the return to work can be arranged with the occupational health physician (pre-return-to-work visit, therapeutic part-time work).

Some of the information sheets date from 2011-2013: they remain the references published by the French National Health Insurance (Assurance Maladie), but techniques evolve and your team may deviate from them. Cataract surgery is not included in this table: its information sheet does not present the durations clearly enough to be copied without risk of error.
